Losing a pet bird is especially devastating because it can be extremely difficult to find them and rescue them. But a good-hearted woman was able to use the Nextdoor app to reconnect a lost cockatiel with his family.

A Friendly Cockatiel Knew Who to Ask for Help

Colleen Strabala isn’t a bird expert, so when she saw a lost cockatiel on a power line in her backyard in Millcreek, Utah, she initially thought that it was a parakeet. As someone who loves animals and wants to be their voice, she didn’t ignore the bird. Instead, she started whistling and talking to him.

The friendly and vocal cockatiel must have realized that Strabala was trustworthy because he flew down and landed on her head before making his way to her shoulder. At this point, it was obvious that this was someone’s lost pet. So, she got him to go inside a small dog kennel that would serve as a temporary cage, complete with sticks for perches and a bowl with tasty food for him.

A Reunion Using the Nextdoor App

Strabala enjoyed her time interacting with and caring for this very special bird. But she wanted to find his family because she knew they must have been missing him and worried about him.

With the help of the Nextdoor app, which connects people in their communities so they can share information and help one another, Strabala was able to find the cockatiel’s family. And she learned that the bird, named Ollie, had actually flown two miles from home. It’s a good thing that he chose to get close to her and stay with her rather than continue flying farther away.

This story proves that, in addition to other strategies for finding lost pets, you can use apps like Nextdoor to post about missing animals, whether you have lost a pet or found one. This can be an effective and efficient way to get the word out about a pet who needs help finding their way back home.
