It’s never easy to get yourself into the Guinness Book of World Records, especially if you are a dog. But for Bobi, that’s not an issue, because he is proudly the world’s oldest dog ever! Born on May 11th, 1992, he is officially 31 (human) years old. And considering that most dogs live between 10 and 13 years, that is quite the feat. Until just recently, everyone thought that Spike, a chihuahua from the USA, who was 23 years old, was the owner of that lofty title.

But Leonel Costa, Bobi’s proud owner, stepped up to prove that his senior pooch was indeed, much, much older. Bobi is a purebred  Rafeiro do Alentejo, a traditional Portuguese livestock guarding dog, and spent his entire life in the rural Portuguese village Conqueiros in Leiria.

The Costa family welcomed Bobi into this world when he was just a tiny puppy from a litter born in the family’s outhouse shed. Ever since this loyal pooch has been the lively spark of the homestead. According to the Guinness World Records, Leonel Costa attributes Bobi's remarkable longevity to the tranquil and serene environment in which he resides, far away from urban areas. Instead of consuming dog food, Bobi has always been nourished with the same meals as his human owners, albeit without any seasonings – they’d soak the food in water to remove them. As per his owners, he also drinks approximately one liter of water daily.

Bobi has never experienced being tethered or leashed. Rather, he has enjoyed the freedom to explore the forests and farmlands surrounding the Costa family's residence. As he has grown older, Bobi's eyesight has deteriorated, causing him to remain closer to home, where he spends time with the family's cats in the backyard. It is worth noting that Bobi's mother, Gira, lived to the age of 18, so it can be said that Bobi comes from a lineage of long-lived dogs.

Still, it isn’t easy being a superstar doggo. Owner Leonel says that they “had a lot of journalists and people come from all over the world to take a picture with Bobi. They’ve come from all over Europe, as well as the USA and even Japan.” Rightfully, Leonel was worried about the possible stress this might cause old Bobi. So he decided it was time for a vet checkup. “There were a lot of pictures taken and he had to get up and down many times. It wasn’t easy for him,” he says. “His health was a little damaged, but now it’s better.” Let’s hope that Bobi gets to celebrate many more birthdays, as he continues to be an inspiration to all the pet parents and their four-legged babies out there!
