Spaniel breeds are a group of hunting and retrieving dogs, or more precisely, gun dogs. This means that they were originally bred for assisting hunters in tracking down and capturing all types of game, but mostly birds, whether on land or on water. Of course, as time passed, the breeds evolved, and now many of the Spaniel breeds are now loved as family pets for their intelligence, friendly disposition, and love for adventure.


In addition to the classic spaniel breeds that fit in the gun dog or bird dog category, there are also “faux” spaniel breeds – dogs that have the name Spaniel in their name but weren’t bred for hunting and retrieving – as well as designer dogs which are spaniel mixes.
