The Most Popular Dog Names of 2023

Max used to be the No. 1 male dog name, and it reigned supreme for 10 years. But in 2023, it was no longer at the top of the list, as Charlie took its place. And the No. 1 trending dog name was Kelce.

The other names that made the list of top 10 male dog names were:

  • Max
  • Cooper
  • Milo
  • Buddy
  • Teddy
  • Rocky
  • Bear
  • Leo
  • Duke

The No. 1 name for female dogs in 2023 was Luna, and the remaining nine in the top 10 list were:

  • Sadie
  • Stella
  • Bailey

The Most Popular Cat Names of 2023

The most popular cat names list revealed that several of the top names for dogs are also among the top names being used for cats. And the name at the top of the list for trending cat names was Norbert.

Here are the names that made it to the top 10 list for cats:

  • Luna
  • Milo
  • Oliver
  • Leo
  • Bella
  • Charlie
  • Lily
  • Kitty
  • Lucy

Trends, Celebrities, and Food Inspire Pet Names

When it comes to naming their beloved dogs and cats, people seem to turn to pop culture and trends for inspiration. Whether it’s a favorite musician, actor, sports player, or movie character, pet parents seem to like naming their furbabies after these figures.

Rover even found that ‘90s references, such as Ginger Spice, Furby, and Alanis, were commonly used to name dogs.

Foods and beverages were also used as inspiration, with names like Grapefruit, Cioppino, Gogurt, Beer, Chardonnay, and Fizz included on the lists for dog names inspired by things people love to eat and drink.

Cats were named after popular movies and their characters, such as Barbie, Castle, and Flounder. And names inspired by sports included Avalanche, Gronk, and Lambeau.

Like dogs, many kitties were also named after foods and drinks, with names like Chive, Babybel, Stuffing, Prosecco, Starbucks, and Tea making the top of those lists.

How Will the Top Names Change Next Year?

Name trends change all the time, although some names remain at the top of the list from one year to the next, and you can keep this in mind when deciding on your name for your furry friend.
