If your kid wants a pet, they have to learn that with all the love and playtime comes a lot of responsibility, as well. Here’s how young children can help care for your dog in a way that makes it fun for everyone!

A pet can bring so much joy and entertainment into your family home. Even if you have young children running around the household, you should not be dissuaded from introducing a doggo into the mix. Most – if not all – dogs and dog breeds can become crucial in the healthy upbringing of your children. The companionship, the goofy escapades, and the endless affection that a dog brings into your family can change everything for the better. But, of course, dogs need to be cared for properly, and learning how to care for a pet can help your kid develop a sense of responsibility early on. But can young children learn how to properly treat and care for a puppy or an adult dog?

Start Small

If you expect your young children to help care for your new pupper properly, you will need to put in some work as well! Parental guidance is crucial in establishing a good initial reaction and a good connection between your children and your pet. You need to guide your young ones towards positive behavior, kindness, and responsibilities. In time, you can introduce simple tasks that help them understand the daily routines of dog care. Start by simple questions and tasks such as “Where do we keep the dog’s food? Will you fetch it?” or “When is Fido’s lunchtime?” and so on. You can then slowly progress to other tasks and responsibilities that help your young ones care for your dog in equal measure.

Rewards Make Chores More Fun

Positive reinforcement for your kids is a crucial element of establishing a proper connection. You can help speed up the learning process by introducing unique features such as a dog care chart. It lists responsibilities for every day of the week, and allows your kids to complete tasks and receive simple treats and rewards for each one. It combines the positive reinforcement process and allows kids to learn more about the essential care for your pet dog.

The more your kids learn about the basic elements of puppy care, the easier the rest of the learning process will become. You can make the process more entertaining by shifting to the more fun parts of the day – bring your kids and your pet to the park for some fun playtime, through which you can emphasize the most important parts of the daily routine. Remember that children aged 7 and above will have a much easier time establishing a healthy and functional, caring relationship with the family’s pet dog.

It’s a Learning Process

Another great thing you can do is make reasonable parallels between your pet and your family’s daily activities. Tell your kids that Fido too needs fresh drinking water, just like they do. Emphasize that sweets and greasy foods are not healthy for dogs, or that playtime in the yard is equally as important to Fido as it is to them. You’ll be surprised to realize just how fast young kids can learn. In no time you should have a healthy relationship between your children and your pet dog, and that makes life in the household so much easier. All that is needed is just a bit of patience and dedicated work.
